Teaching students to become Culture Detectives
An SEL adjacent workshop to directly address online masculinity extremism through critical thinking skills.
The Culture Detective workshop for schools is designed to help young people (and adults) apply critical thinking skills to all social media influencers including extremist masculinity influencers like Andrew Tate.
The Culture Detective module compliments Social Emotional Learning programs, inviting boys, girls, and non-binary kids to expand their understanding of the powerful role cultures play in forming our social identities and relational capacities.
The Culture Detective module requires 1.5 hours. We provide an equivalent Culture Detective training for teachers administrators.
The Culture Detective workshop teaches:
- How to think critically about social media influencers
- Awareness of our various micro and macro cultures as evolving collective agreements
- Researching historical context as a way to track culture shifts
Download our Culture Detective .PDF file for an in-depth explainer of the workshop.
Please note, this presentation is designed to ASK QUESTIONS of the young people in the audience.
I am continually surprised and further informed by the range of answers and the depth of understanding my audiences have about all of the cultural issues I raise and inquire about.

This linked .pdf file is not simply a presentation deck. Think of it as a very short book, designed the make the case for inviting students into a conversation about our culture of masculinity vs. about masculine identity.
This deck contains:
1) actual slides that I display to students
2) spoken content- what I say during the presentation (usually found in slide notes) and
3) comments regarding the theory underlying this “culture detective” work.
The Culture Detective program is designed and facilitated by Mark Greene of Remaking Manhood. Please connect with us for more information for how you can use this work in your school or workplace.
